{"id":10429,"date":"2017-04-29T22:03:25","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T02:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andrewbaseman.com\/blog\/?p=10429"},"modified":"2017-05-01T08:08:31","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T12:08:31","slug":"welsh-jug-with-metal-handle-c-1850","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/?p=10429","title":{"rendered":"Welsh jug with metal handle, c.1850"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This little pearlware pottery cream jug was\u00a0made in the unpronounceable village\u00a0of Ynysmeudwy, Wales during\u00a0the mid-19th century and was part of a child&#8217;s tea set. It is decorated with moulded relief of hunters,\u00a0dogs, and flowers, with flow blue glaze and\u00a0copper lustre bands\u00a0at\u00a0the rim and\u00a0base. It\u00a0stands nearly 3.5 inches high and is\u00a0marked\u00a0&#8220;35&#8221; in copper lustre on the underside.<\/p>\n<p>As is true of the many fragile items for children that I have in my collection, this poor jug\u00a0must have slipped\u00a0from the hands of a nervous child, who no doubt was told to handle it with care. Well over 100 years ago, as a result of the mishap, a tinker made\u00a0a sturdy metal replacement handle. There must have been a lot of pressure placed on small children when they\u00a0were given delicate playthings like this, and unjustly\u00a0punished when the inevitable happened. I can just imagine the collective sigh of relief heard worldwide\u00a0when\u00a0children\u00a0were given unbreakable toys made of plastic to toss about as\u00a0they pleased.<\/p>\n<p><a
