I found this grain shovel, hand carved from one piece of wood, at an antique shop only a few miles from my weekend house in upstate NY. It measures 36&#8243; long by 13&#8243; wide and I believe the wood to be pine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3486.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1545\" title=\"IMG_3486\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3486.jpg 400w, http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3486-153x300.jpg 153w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was not unusual for large utilitarian pieces carved from a single piece of wood to crack.
