So when the handle broke off, a &#8220;do-it-yourself&#8221; metal handle was attached<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3101\" title=\"IMG_3656\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3656.jpg 399w, http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3656-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I imagine you could purchase these clip-on replacement handles at a hardware or dry goods store<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_36481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3103\" title=\"IMG_3648\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_36481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_36481.jpg 400w, http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_36481-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reino Liefkes, Senior Curator of the Ceramics &amp; Glass Collection at the V&amp;A Museum in London researched the patent number and discovered it belonged to Frederick Warren Wilkes of Birmingham, UK. The handle, dating to 1922, was named &#8220;Emergency Handle for Domestic Receptacles&#8221;.
