Unlike\u00a0most examples found in my collection, this was obviously not a handmade repair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1835_21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3958\" title=\"IMG_1835_2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1835_21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1835_21.jpg 400w, http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1835_21-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Due to heavy rust, the handle appeared to be unmarked and I was unable to proceed with executing any further research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1837_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_1837_3\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1837_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I originally added the cup entry to this site in March 2010, I surmised that the handle &#8220;looks like something found at a local hardware store&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1838_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_1838_3\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1838_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then in April of this year, two years after the discovery of the mysterious replacement handle, I purchased a copper lustre child&#8217;s\u00a0mug with an identical metal handle, which I posted on July 6, 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3652_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3652_2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3652_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luckily this handle was in excellent condition and clearly boasted a\u00a0patent number.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3646_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3646_2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3646_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reino Liefkes, Senior Curator of the Ceramics &amp; Glass Collection at the V&amp;A Museum in London, recently discovered my blog and sent me the original patent specification and drawing for the &#8220;Emergency Handle For Domestic Receptacles&#8221;, patented in 1922 by inventor Frederick Warren Wilkes of Birmingham, UK.
