{"id":9359,"date":"2015-04-18T19:07:16","date_gmt":"2015-04-18T23:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andrewbaseman.com\/blog\/?p=9359"},"modified":"2015-04-18T19:07:16","modified_gmt":"2015-04-18T23:07:16","slug":"mortlake-stoneware-jug-c-1800","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.andrewbaseman.com\/?p=9359","title":{"rendered":"Mortlake stoneware jug , c.1800"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This heavy\u00a0salt glazed\u00a0stoneware ale jug was made in\u00a0Mortlake, London,\u00a0in\u00a0the late 1700s to early 1800s. It has\u00a0an attenuated baluster shape with\u00a0applied sprigged decoration including a panel of \u201cThe Two Boors\u201d, horses and hounds, classical figures, trees and a windmill on a mound. It stands 8&#8243; high and has\u00a0a rilled neck and a narrow base, much of which has been chipped away.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s apparent\u00a0that\u00a0the original handle is long gone\u00a0but luckily for me, a tinsmith in the 1800s fashioned a wonderful metal replacement handle. It has crimped edges for extra support and a finger rest for comfort when tightly gripped. I imagine\u00a0the original owner and a\u00a0chum\u00a0were inspired by the front panel depicting\u00a0\u201cThe Two Boors\u201d, drank too much ale and dropped the jug. But if it weren&#8217;t for our ancestors who drank to excess, my collection of ale jugs with inventive repairs would be minimal to nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p><a
