White ironstone water jug, c.1870

Not much is known about this large white ironstone water jug with impressed basket weave design and pearlware glaze. It was found at a bottle dig site in Harper’s Ferry, NY, and remarkably, the tin handle, buried in the ground for dozens of years, remained mostly intact. The neck and spout of the jug were not so lucky, as much has broken off, revealing an asymmetrical jagged edge. This scrappy jug was made in England in the mid to late 19th century, and measures 9-1/4″ hight to top of handle and is 7-1/2″ at its widest point.

“Dragons in Compartments” cup & saucer, c.1800

This fine, lightweight porcelain cup & saucer set was made in Dresden, Germany in the late 18th century. It is hand decorated with polychrome enamels and gold highlights in the wonderfully stylized “Dragons in Compartments” pattern, also known as the “Bengal Tiger”, “Kylin” or “Bishop Sumner” pattern . At one point in its early life, someone sipping an expresso was so scared by the fierce dragons depicted on the sides that it was dropped and broke into 3 pieces. Gathering the broken shards and somehow finding the strength to face the fierce fire breathing monsters again, the brave soul brought the broken cup to a tinker, who was able to restore it, using metal staples. The intact saucer measures 4-1/2″ in diameter and I would have much preferred if it too were repaired with staples!

This li’l dragon seems to be smoking a stogie, which is actually a metal staple keeping him in one piece.

There are 8 tiny staples on the outside and one on the inside, once overpainted to mask the repair.

Cup measures 2″ in diameter and stands 2″ high.

Isn’t this the cutest, non-threatening dragon you have ever seen? To me it looks more like a super-hero kitten sporting a purple cape with green fringe.

Both the cup and saucer are mark on the bottom in blue “Made at Dresden”.

 

Small copper lustre gravelware jug, c.1840

A tiny copper lustre jug, made in England in the mid-19th century, has an applied decorative gravel band at the bottom. It measures just 2-3/4″ tall.

In America, lustreware became popular in mid-19th century. During the Victorian period, a certain dinner party fad was to place lustreware pieces on a mirrored platform as a table centerpiece and watch the glow of gaslight sparkle and shimmer.

Over 100 years ago, a tinsmith made a sturdy replacement handle with two support straps after the original handle broke off. I particularly like the elegant loop the handle makes at the peak, avoiding the remaining broken fragment of the original.

This jug, with similar form and decoration, shows what the simple handle on my perfectly imperfect jug would have looked like before its disfiguring accident.

Thai Buddha amulet, c.1920

This small pottery amulet has an image in relief of Somdej, a Buddhist monk and son to King Rama II, meditating on a coiled snake, and was found in a temple in Siam (Modern Thailand) in the first part of the 19th century. These are typically found snugly fitted into tiny metal frames, allowing the amulet to be worn by a worshiper. In this case, the metal frame broke off and the owner or a tinker came up with a fast and economical remedy by encasing the amulet in what looks like small scale chicken wire. Not the most attractive solution but I am sure the owner was most appreciative and happy just to be able to wear the amulet again.

Amulet measures nearly 2″ long.

Another amulet, with similar design and form, is housed in a more appropriate metal frame. This is a more standard method of encasing and was perhaps how my amulet looked early in its life.

Nanking sauceboat with multiple repairs, c.1750

I have often expressed that I am a sucker for pieces containing more than one form of early repair and this little beauty does not disappoint, as it sports three separate repairs and a signature to boot. Chinese porcelain sauceboat, made for export in the mid-1700s, was originally part of a large dinner set consisting of up to dozens of place settings and serving pieces, including a matching pair of sauceboats. Painted with cobalt blue underglaze in the Nanking pattern, it measures 7-3/4″ long from end to end and is 4-1/4″ deep.

Repair #1: Metal replacement handle, which may have once been covered in woven reed, was riveted to the end of the sauceboat, echoing the loop form of the original.

Repair #2: After the sauceboat was dropped a second time, an eighteenth century china mender carefully applied six 1/2″ staples to adhere the two large broken pieces near the spout.

Repair #3: Three tiny 1/4″ metal staples affix another large piece which broke off at the end of the sauceboat. They were overpainted in blue to match the decoration and over one hundred years later have held up quite well.

Etched on the bottom is “Cove 835”, which I am assuming is the mark of the china mender or tinker who was responsible for one or more of the repairs. I have not been able to find out any information on this cryptic signature but will continue to search and I welcome information anyone can provide.

Miniature pearlware ladle, c.1840

English miniature soft paste pottery pearlware ladle from set of child’s dishes, measuring 3-3/4″ long and dating from the early to middle 1800s. The two broken halves are bound together by a criss cross of thin brass wire woven through 2 tiny holes on either side of the break. Small dabs of cement in each hole help secure the repair.

I pity the small child who briefly lost the use of their ladle during what might have been a fantasy feast. And I applaud the person who came to the rescue, making the two broken pieces whole again, thus allowing the imaginary dinner party to continue!

 

Bloor Derby coffee can, c.1810

Colorful porcelain coffee can exquisitely decorated in the French style, made between 1806 and 1825 in London by Derby at their Nottingham Road factory. The wishbone form handle was detached over 150 years ago and riveted, soon afterward, back onto the body by a skilled metalsmith. It is marked on the underside with a red crown, crossed batons a “D” and (pattern number) 770, all hand painted in red.

Now that I own two pieces from this stunning tea set, I am on the hunt to find the remaining pieces. But naturally, I will turn away from “perfect” examples and only rescue the ones with inventive repairs!

 

Worcester porcelain plate, c.1770

Porcelain plate made in England by Worcester in the late 1700s is brightly decorated with cartouches containing colorful floral sprays surrounded by gilt scrollwork and a scale background of mottled cobalt blue.

Unsigned plate measures 9-1/2″ in diameter.

Although most items I have seen repaired with metal staples are holding multiple pieces back together, this plate has bronze staples stabilizing cracks against further damage. I like how the symmetrical pattern of the cracks and the staples form an almost perfect peace sign.

Teapot with kingfisher decoration, c.1750

Chinese globular form porcelain teapot with underglaze decoration featuring a kingfisher and pink peonies in the famille rose palette. This popular form was made for export to North America and Europe in the mid 1700s.

Teapot measures 5-1/2″ high and 7-3/4″ wide, from tip of spout to end of handle.

After the original porcelain loop handle broke off, a tinker formed a replacement using bronze covered in woven rattan. I have many examples of wrapped handles on teapots, each with slight variations. I am researching the different decorative patterns used and hope to identify the distinctions unique to each maker.

Mini Sunderland jug with EHFDR, c.1850

I recently found a third example of a damaged piece repaired with an EHFDR (Emergency Handle for Domestic Receptacles). This little pottery “Dutch’ shape jug, with orange lustre and transfer decoration of a sailing ship, stands just 3-3/4″ high and is 4-3/4” wide. It was made in Sunderland, England, in the middle of the 19th century. The mass-produced replacement handle was added sometime after 1922.

The simple loop handle on this intact jug shows what the handle on my jug would have looked like, before the metal replacement was added.
